I combine trips to save gas, and don't have a regular commute, though I do like to take a road trip every now and then. When I travel from my town in Connecticut to my boyfriend's place in NYC, I always take the train, leaving my car sitting in the garage for two or three days.

    There are other agencies that will let you take cars into Canada. You may have to try different drop off locations for available rates. You could also try breaking your rental into two seperate rentals depending on where you are heading. Say you are going to Toronto, try dropping in Buffalo and doing another rental to Toronto.
